Original Voodoo Doughnuts – 22 SW 3rd Ave, Portland, OR 97204 – If you want the true downtown Voodoo experience of waiting in line to get a doughnut this is the place. But you also have to imagine it is 2 a.m. and you are on low beam. In the early years this was the busiest doughnut shop in the nation from midnight to 4 a.m.
Voodoo Doughnuts, too – 1501 NE Davis St, Portland, OR 97232 – If you just want to try their doughnut. Normally not much of a line and no imagination required.
What’s the story here- Voodoo was the first place to start making weird doughnut. Before this you had the doughnut chain places like Dunken Donuts making standard stuff-nothing with bacon on it, nothing with a stake through the heart, and nothing with Fruit Loop Cereal on top. It became a tradition to stop in here after your night partying in the Pearl to sugar up before going home. I think the entry was in the middle of the block then. How stopping in here got to be a thing to do when visiting Portland I don’t know. But you should have been here when the Pearl was just old warehouses with artists and galleries everywhere. Then Voodoo Doughnut really fit in. The Real Portlandia times.
